A few months ago, I launched the organization process for the Nazarene Human Arts Fund, or NHAF. I established it to create economic lifelines for artists facing the unpredictable disruption of generative AI, and I believe that while technology changes, the necessity of the human element in art remains absolute. I also want to curate great art, because I love art. Killing a few birds with one stone here.
I published an essay today that reflects on the NHAF’s perspective on AI. Of course, the philosophies of the NHAF are my philosophies, so it ended up an introspection of some of my own perspectives on AI as well. It is far more nuanced than you may assume, especially provided the purpose of the NHAF. I suggest you give it a read. I made this post because I know more people read my blog than they read the NHAF’s.
Looking to join?
By the way, I am looking for people to staff the NHAF. I especially need board members as legal requirements mandate a minimum board headcount for non-profit organizations. If you have art in your heart and you agree with the purpose of the NHAF, please send me an email at hello@louka.sh with your candidacy. A few things I’m looking out for, none of which are hard requirements:
- Previous experience with non-profits. Think Unicode or FSF.
- A subjective sense that you know art better than most people. Bring out your self-assuredness that your artistic sense is better than others, it will be useful here.
- Ability to travel, especially to and fro the United States and Canada. It is okay if you are very remote and cannot realistically travel this far on the regular.
- Assertiveness when stakeholders are making decisions you don’t like, but utmost respect for the consensus. No sour grapes or people prone to sudden personality changes when things go awry.
Also, adults only. Normally, I shouldn’t have to spell this out, but provided my blog’s audience isn’t always of grown age, it has become a necessity.
I plan to launch the NHAF in late 2026 or early 2027, depending on the evolution of my own circumstances. This isn’t a hard date, but it should be enough time.
